Many of the themes coming to light under this vision are centred less on infrastructure as a technical-functional device and more on the notion of constructions with the ability to cast the form of the city according to a logic of interconnection that embraces all scales.

They offer a comparison of the work of international offices, foreign and well-known, such as Zaha Hadid and MVRDV, and Chinese, for example, Vector Architects and MAD Architects, with that of Chinese offices working primarily in China, who bring a new sensitivity to the design and transformation of the territory.

470 – Italian review. Eclecticism through continuity

The 13 projects selected for this issue represent a multiplicity of themes, lines of research and languages that remain vital to italian contemporary architecture. The private single – and two-family home is one of these themes, as demonstrated by three examples presented. Another theme is the transformation of the existing through interventions of reconfiguration, reuse and expansion, that constitutes one of the principal challenges for architects. A challenge that implies new interpretations and processes of rewriting.

Co-housing – the subject of this issue – is one of the many responses being provided by a more general search for new residential models. Responses triggered by the transformation of lifestyles and social and cultural changes taking place, that are largely ignored by current architectural production. These changes are leading toward the development of an alternative model of dwelling: a hybrid between the traditional home and communal dwellings, known as co-housing.

This tenth edition of the Review, now a substantial repertory of works of architecture built in Italy over the course of almost two decades, is not simply another collection of projects but above all an occasion for looking beyond the present into the future of Italian architecture. This intention produced the idea of publishing five essays by the curators of the Italian Pavilion from the past ten years of the International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale.
