The pandemic has once again placed the home at the centre of our lives and the dynamics of contemporary society. “Living the domestic landscape” proposes a reflection on the broader meaning of the home today and in the near future, with a particular focus not only on its organisational structure and consequent values, but above all for its spatial characteristics in relation to the emotional sphere and different lifestyles of its inhabitants. The selection of projects presented in this issue is dedicated to 10 domestic projects designed by leading architects between 1936 and 1978. Each is a bearer of spatial values and themes of research, still of value today, despite particular geographic circumstances and the passing of time.

This issue reflects on the role of green spaces in the dynamics of transformation and redevelopment of the contemporary city. In recent years, the natural component is taking on new value, due to the heavy urban densification processes and their global effects on the environmental balance. These processes require a clearly defined approach on empty spaces at all scales, from the single building to the neighbourhood to the urban fabric, in order to obtain a healthier living environment, able to provide meeting and exchange opportunities.

From this principle and from the idea that architecture projects must be not only speculative but truly centred on quality and the common good, the world of architects and the system of builders must set out together to restore actions intent on transforming our habitat to coherent trajectories of development, respectful of people and the environment.

The construction industry, as we know, produces the greatest damages to the environment in all of its phases: from the preparation of raw materials and components to the construction site to the use and operation of what is built. The projects selected for this issue present a vast range of situations in which the principles of recycling are applied not only to buildings, dilapidated areas or entire landscapes. They also demonstrate the ability to trigger virtuous processes of regeneration extended to the broader physical, social and economic context. Furthermore, this logic assigns the architect a determinant role in controlling the diverse phases.
