A selection of public buildings by international renowned architects such as OMA, MVRDV, UN STUDIO and MECANOO, for years the undisputed protagonists of the most important urban transformations in The Netherlands’ principal cities. These architects, despite changing conditions ushered in by the economic crisis, demonstrate an ability to maintain the coherence of their research.

Despite the persistence of the economic crisis in Europe, urban transformations in some cities have continued, and in some cases actually increased. This is the case of Hamburg, a waterfront city in search of a new identity. Here the quality and wellbeing of the city’s population are entrusted to the architectural quality of buildings and public spaces.

Copenhagen is now a unique model. The attention toward the urban environment is constantly on the rise, together with the economic role of the country’s building industry. The projects presented in this issue confront issues of fundamental importance, such as the rehabilitation of peripheral areas, the integration between infrastructure and urban fabric and typological innovation through experimental approaches.
