The construction industry, as we know, produces the greatest damages to the environment in all of its phases: from the preparation of raw materials and components to the construction site to the use and operation of what is built. The projects selected for this issue present a vast range of situations in which the principles of recycling are applied not only to buildings, dilapidated areas or entire landscapes. They also demonstrate the ability to trigger virtuous processes of regeneration extended to the broader physical, social and economic context. Furthermore, this logic assigns the architect a determinant role in controlling the diverse phases.

They offer a comparison of the work of international offices, foreign and well-known, such as Zaha Hadid and MVRDV, and Chinese, for example, Vector Architects and MAD Architects, with that of Chinese offices working primarily in China, who bring a new sensitivity to the design and transformation of the territory.

470 – Italian review. Eclecticism through continuity

The 13 projects selected for this issue represent a multiplicity of themes, lines of research and languages that remain vital to italian contemporary architecture. The private single – and two-family home is one of these themes, as demonstrated by three examples presented. Another theme is the transformation of the existing through interventions of reconfiguration, reuse and expansion, that constitutes one of the principal challenges for architects. A challenge that implies new interpretations and processes of rewriting.
