This issue of the magazine, dedicated to recently completed scholastic buildings in Italy, wishes to join the debate, on-going for some years now, examining an institutional theme of great social, cultural and political importance. It wishes to do so by dealing in particular with the question of spaces for education and their correspondence with the needs of the transformation underway. Rethinking a school building in terms of its interior spaces, and above all its relations with the urban fabric, represents a challenge faced by all of the selected projects.

More than one century after the first Italian Exposition of 1906, EXPO 2015 is back in Milan, a city in a constant state of ferment thanks to the numerous transformations present across its territory. Part of the former Soviet Union, and now witnessing important economic and cultural growth, Poland is also the most vast and active in the field of architecture, with an intense output over the past decade. This issue of l’industria delle costruzioni presents a selection of projects intended as key interventions for revitalising abandoned urban environments or parts of the city waiting to be completed, result of a collective commitment and desire.

Containing the expansion of our cities is a need as well as a challenge and a resource for architecture. This is demonstrated by the selection of projects displayed in this issue, following the Italian tradition of transforming the existing heritage and building on existing structures. With the sole exception of the waste-to-energy plant in Bolzano, the projects selected offer a broad case study: from the substitution or completion of buildings in historic centres to the transformation of existing structures, to the reconversion of large brownfield sites for the creation of new urban centralities for mixed functions.
