The projects presented in this issue are small to medium sized projects, almost always the result of a fruitful and collaborative relationship between architect and client; the majority are situated in smaller cities, where they serve as social and economic drivers; their architects, most from smaller practices, control the work from concept to construction, a decisive aspect for favouring linguistic research and experiments with technologies and materials, but also for managing renunciations introduced by limited budgets, without completely upsetting the meaning of a project.

For several years, Europe has been involved by an active debate on directions and tools for the sustainable urban development. Recent urban policies within the European Community have mainly based around actions of transformation, regeneration, construction over and inside the built environment. Many studies focus on interactions between density and nature and examine the concept of density, on its measurement and limits. The essays and the projects presented in this issue fit into this debate and share significant considerations, through experiences carried out in contexts such as France, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

Thanks to its aesthetic dimension, architecture has always played an important role in consolidating power relations within societies. Looking at contemporary architecture, particular some works by internationally renowned authors, is an opportunity to open a series of reflections on the architectural project and its ability to affect lifestyles and participate in the process of building a new society that is urgently needed today.

The pandemic has once again placed the home at the centre of our lives and the dynamics of contemporary society. “Living the domestic landscape” proposes a reflection on the broader meaning of the home today and in the near future, with a particular focus not only on its organisational structure and consequent values, but above all for its spatial characteristics in relation to the emotional sphere and different lifestyles of its inhabitants. The selection of projects presented in this issue is dedicated to 10 domestic projects designed by leading architects between 1936 and 1978. Each is a bearer of spatial values and themes of research, still of value today, despite particular geographic circumstances and the passing of time.
