About Detail in Architecture
Despite the complexity of the contemporary design process and the increasingly wide gap between design and execution phases detail and tectonics have fundamental relevance in our discipline. The expressivity of an architectural work cannot be entrusted to industrial culture, to serial, assembled products, without the action of detail definition: that would mean renouncing one of the foundational aspects of an architect’s job. The following selection of works and their introductive essays propose different interpretations of detail: from a tool of formal expression along the path of design research to a mediation device between technical-executive aspects and poetic will; from a tool for measurement and control of scale relationships to an important item in the reuse and restoration of the existing building heritage; finally, a valuable contribution to the definition of the spatial characteristics of an interior, which generates emphatic relationships with its inhabitants.
