The Transformation of an Existing House as an Opportunity to reinvent the Domestic Space and Lifestyle

In this house, the theme of the relationship with pre-existing elements is seen as an opportunity to reflect on the potential of the built environment realized in the post-war period as a chance for developing new housing typologies and modalities. The original house, a cottage from the ‘70s, was not expanded. Instead, it has generated the possibility for a new, independent building. The demolition of the pre-existing roof allows using the new roof slab as a garden roof serving the new housing unit. Even though it is located on the same plot of land, the new house offers alternatives to the pre-existing conditions and propose a new, broader landscape. The new house reaches higher, hanging, by creating an empty courtyard, connecting all the environments and expanding the domestic space.
