A Portrait of Italian Architecture
60 years of prizes to innovative architectures
Beatrice Fumarola
The IN/Arch Awards ran almost annually from 1961 to 1972. After a more-than-15-year break, they resumed in 1989 and continued until 1992, divided into National Awards and Regional Awards. After a 13-year hiatus, mainly thanks to the collaboration with ANCE, the National Architecture Awards “IN/Arch- ANCE” were relaunched in 2005 and ran for five editions until 2014. The awards have lost the names of the two promoting associations. Their new name, “IN/ARCHITETTURA”, communicates a strong and clear message that engages IN/Arch and ANCE, in collaboration with the digital platform Archilovers. The Award is a plaque commemorating the work, showing the three main parties who contributed to its creation: client, designer and contractor. By their nature and structure, the IN/Arch awards first and the IN/Arch-ANCE awards later have always clearly affirmed that the quality of architecture is not confined to aesthetic-linguistic issues. Instead, it is the outcome of a complex process involving all the steps of the production chain: demand, needs, program, standards, resources, design, implementation, control, management and maintenance.
