Redevelopment of Capannone 18 in the Former “Officine Reggiane” area in Reggio Emilia
Building Redevolpment Prize
Andrea Oliva
Capannone 18 covers the north bank of the southeast quadrant of the former Officine Reggiane. This mechanical basilica comprises three aisles of different heights. Punctuated by 28 steel portals unionized with hot nails, these aisles hosted the juxtaposed construction of huge tanks and large steam locomotives. In such a context, real design innovation lies in integral conservation. That refers to the total restoration of the artifact as well as process residues, stains, writings and imperfections. The approximation and apparent degradation are consolidated and transformed into a set of information, notes, writings and stories.
