SON Cascina San Carlo in Milan
New Building Prize
B22 | arch. Stefano Tropea
Cascina San Carlo is a vestige of Crescenzago’s agricultural past: it was built in 1915 in the middle of large plots of “marcite”, then its crisis started in the 1960s as a result of the intensive exploitation of water resources by the large industrial complexes. The complex has been preserved from demolition and now declared a service of public and general interest by the Social Policy Directorate of the City of Milan. The project consists of a cluster of social and housing services with a pavilion open to civic and public activities: it includes the rehabilitation of Cascina San Carlo and the redevelopment and expansion of the adjacent public park.
